FringeNYC – just a taste

Fringe nyc 2015Seventeen days. Sixteen venues. Lots more numbers of performances and many countries are involved. Now in its 19th year, The New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC) kicks off August 14th in what is a virtual smorgasbord of offerings – there are dramas, musicals, comedies, puppets, improv …

The press was given a sneak peek at what FringeNYC’s organizers call some highlights of the festival. Based upon the “teases” I thoroughly enjoyed Single Room Occupancy – maybe because the synopsis says it’s “A story for anyone who’s biggest obstacle is themselves.” The musical number I heard has six characters singing about dating in the modern era of Tinder, Grindr, JDate, etc., as smartphones are being swiped. How could I not like The Curious Case of Phineas Gage, which tells the true story of a railroad worker who survived a spike in his head and led to neuroscientific discoveries. And there’s the lyric “Phineas, you’re far from hideous.”

The Broken Record is an extremely timely story which examines violence between black youth and police officers, Divine/Intervention imagines the last night of Glenn Milstead, the man we knew as Divine, and To Dance – The Musical features a lovely pas de deux and there were three other shows that also look compelling. So whether you’re looking for dance or drama, true tales or tall tales, FringeNYC will certainly have something to fit the bill. AFW
