When January Feels Like Summer – things heat up in Harlem

JanuaryPostcardPressThings heat up in Cori Thomas’ off-beat romantic comedy When January Feels Like Summer when five characters’ lives intersect in unexpected ways. It’s a play that is as poignant as it is well-acted.

Two African-American teenagers, one a bit brainier than the other become neighborhood heroes. While posting a flyer in a local convenience store they meet Indira  and her sister, Nirmala. Indira WAS Ishan, a male accountant, who must now must figure out how to pay for her gender-reassignment surgery. She decides to begin a matchmaking business and Joe (a local sanitation worker) is her first client. Complications ensue between Nirmala and Joe and when one of the teenage boys falls for Indira how is she going to explain to this “not so sharp” kid what’s really going on? What she says to him will stick with you for a long time. Debargo Sanyal gives a terrific performance in the dual role Ishan/Indira.

The story may sound improbable and at times is a bit silly and far-fetched, but the characters are so likeable that you find yourself believing it and rooting for everyone as they search for love. LAR
